When you launch an online business, the issue of return on investment will quickly rear its head. This brings us to the issue of how your site will benefit from SEO.
SEO is the art and process of getting a site ranked on the first page of results for various keyword phrase searches on Google, Yahoo and so on. For instance, the keyword phrase for our home page is "seo services". This means we want to appear on the first page of results when someone does a search for this phrase on the search engines. Once we get our rankings into the top 10, we can count on getting visitors to our site each and every day as long as we maintain the rankings. This is also how your site will benefit from SEO.
Think for a moment about your site. Define it. If you had to pick any one to three world phrase to describe it, what would it be? Now think about how people would search for it. If you can get ranked in the top 10 for that phrase, you will be providing web surfers with the solution to their problem. Let's look at an example.
Assume I live in Atlanta. Assume further that I am starting a site through which I am offering preparation classes for the SAT college entrance exam. There are obviously a large number of high school students looking for such classes. I am, however, restricted to Atlanta, to wit, I don't want clients from Denver. What is the keyword phrase I want to be ranked under? Well, most people are going to search for "Atlanta SAT prep classes." My goal is to have my site appear in the first couple of spots when someone searches for this phrase on Google, Yahoo and MSN.
How will my site benefit from SEO? Think about it this way. I will have to put some work in to get ranked in the top 10 for this phrase. It might take a year. Once I am there, however, I am going to get free traffic to my site. More importantly, I am going to get people looking for my service and ready to buy.
Now think long term. Once I have my rankings, I can maintain them with a nominal amount of effort. This means I will effectively receive free traffic and potential clients each and every day, 365 days a year, every year. That is how a site benefits in the long-term from SEO.
SEO is a bit of a demanding game. It can take some time for rankings to be obtained. Frankly, it can really try a person's patience. Once they are obtained, however, the reward is tremendous.
